Introduction

The purpose of this text is to provide a general overview of the culture and is intended as a resource for students and teachers of European Archaeology.

Location

The type site of Aichbühl is located in Baden-Württemberg, South Germany.

Dating (Chronological Table).

The assemblage is rather poorly dated. It has a C14 date of 4340BC (68.2%) 4245 cal BC (68.2% probability) and a postquem tree ring date of 4229 BC. Many archaeologists favor the more recent end of the range. However, at this point in time, I would not rule out any part of the whole range.

Evolution

The assemblage is seen as a peripheral development of Lengyel. However, some pottery appears to have Rössen affinities. Aichbühl precedes the “lake dwelling” or wetland sites of neighboring Schussenried and Hornstaad on the Bodensee (Map of Neolithic sites).

Ceramics

The pottery is difficult to assess. It is thought to belong to the ill dated Lengyel III phase (Austrian-Moravian Painted Ware IIb). Pots include white encrusted stab and drag design. There appears to be no direct development from Aichbühl into Schussenried  pottery.

Enclosures

Several relatively small enclosures are known.

Houses

The floor plan is rectangular with a large, roughly trapezoidal patio at in front of the doorway. The doorway is at the narrow side of the house.
