Introduction

·         The British data is a supplement to the tables containing part of the ca. 5000 Funnel Beaker culture tombs and German gallery-graves that analyzed for the 1995 Ph. D. dissertation at the Anthropology Department, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

·         A number of British megalithic structures were discussed in this dissertation to show the similarities and differences between them and the North and Central European architecture.

·         No systematic data collection of the British structures is intended.

·         No guarantee for accuracy is made.

·         If you find any discrepancies, would like to add new information, have other comments, or would like to quote the contents, please contact Max Baldia.

The Standing Stone or menhir (2.5:1.5 m) Warwickshire, Central England, is part of three to four individual prehistoric monuments. They are located on a relatively narrow ridge, dividing two valleys. The King Stone is across the road from the Bronze Age King’s Men stone circle (30 m diameter) by the plowed down Archdruit’s Barrow. (The pictures were taken in mid December1996 around 16:00 hours in nearly dark conditions.)

Silbury Hill

SalburyHillGB1996-r04p08CAWEB.jpg
Silbury Hill, Witlshire, Central England is the largest prehistoric tumulus (round-mound) in Europe. It was probably completed around 2650 cal BC. The mound is located near the monumental Avebury stone circle and other prehistoric monuments are in the vicinity. Even Stonhenge is only a few mile/kilometers away. (The pictures were taken December 21, 1996.)

The White Horse of Wiltshire

The White Horse of Wiltshire
The White Horese of Witlshire, Central England is one of several horses, and anthropomorphic hillside figures decorating the English country side. Dating of these images is difficult. They are made by removing the sod. Maintenance is required to keep the horse visible. (The pictures were taken early in the morning of December 21, 1996.)
